Duino Castle is a private castle located in the municipality of Duino-Aurisina / Devin-Nabrežina, in the province of Trieste, region Friuli Venezia Giulia.

Owned for over 420 years of family Thurn und Taxis (German princes belonging to the Holy Roman Empire) branch of Valsassina (von Thurn-Hofer und Valsassina) first and then the principles of the Thurn und Taxis. Since 2003 the park of the castle is opened to the public for tours.

From the castle you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the steep cliffs overlooking the sea. In the park there is a Bunker used during the World War II.

The history of the family Thurn und Taxis is related to the management of postal services as this activity practiced in several European countries including Italy, Austria, Germany, Hungary and the Netherlands from 1400 onwards for more of 350 years.

With the Duino Castle is related the Legend of the White Lady (La Leggenda della Dama Bianca).

Once upon a time in the Castle of Duino lived an evil knight who despised his wife who was very kind and virtuous lady. Although she loved him so much that forgive him all the offenses and she was hoping to soften his heart with loving words.

Basic Information:

 

The Marina Reserve of Miramare is established in 1986 by decree of the Ministry of the Environment entrusted the management of the Italian Association for the WWF. The State Reserve covers an area of ​​30 hectares and is surrounded by a sea area of 90 hectares regulated by the Ordinance of the Harbour.

The protected area is surrounded and partially protected by so called "Buffer" (established by Ordinance of the Port of Trieste). This second area of 90 hectares in extent, is further protected belt of 400 meters wide, where it is not allowed fishing.

The protected area is situated at the foot of the promontory of Miramare, wedged between the coastal foothills of Grignano marina and the coast of Barcola, summer beach destination of the premises. The environment in which it is located is a real sea-coast rocky coast and in the portion which slopes down into rocks, pebbles and mud formations as they goes from one coast to the sea. The seabed is rocky, stony and sandy to the depth of 8 meters and consist of mud, the maximum depth is 18 meters. The coast has the typical limestone karst the territory of which the promontory of Miramare is a small extension of the shoreline.

Trieste is the region center of Friuli Venezia Giulia. It is located in a very narrow piece of earth of Italy in the border with Slovenija. The city of Trieste was one of the oldest parts of the Habsburg Monarchy from 1382 until 1918. In the 19th century it was the most important port of the Great Powers of Europe. As a prosperous seaport in the Mediterranean region Trieste became the fourth largest city of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (after Vienna, Budapest, and Prague).

In the past Trieste was an important spot in the struggle between the Eastern and Western blocs. Trieste is as alive memory for many people and generations passed there, the first island of the liberty for them.

Trieste is almost at the end of the Adriatic Sea here and it is often exposed to very strong frozen winds in the winter. So the best months to visit it are in the summer.

How to go to Trieste?

Situated on the Adriatic sea makes Trieste very easy reachable with all kind of transport: by water, by air, by train and by car.

    • By Air

Going to Trieste via air you have two possibility to go. The closest and local one is the airport of Trieste. But if you have a suitable fly to Venezia you can use also this line. Once being in one these airports you can rent a car to get a taxi to Trieste.

    • By Train

Trieste is server by RFI, that connect the city with all the parts of Italy.

Ferrovia Meridionale is connecting the city with Lubiana and Vienna.

Instead Transalpine Railway reaches the current Czech Republic.

The passenger traffic of Trieste is concentrated in the central station with daily connections (EurostarCity, InterCity, Intercity Night) to all major Italian cities. Trains Euronight for Eastern Europe stop at Villa Opicina.

 

    • By Car

Being in one of the most important crossroads not only in Italy but also in Europe Trieste have very good connections with all Europe.

With Torino, Venezia it is connected via Highway A4.

The European Route E70 is going to Lubiana.

The European Route E61 is going to Villaco (Austria) - Fiume (Croazia).

Instead the European Route E751 is going to Capodistria e Pola.

There is an optional Regional Route SR14 that is parallel to A4 and it is a beautiful panoramic way from Trieste to Monfalcone.

 

    • By Boat

Trieste has an impressive large port with several terminals from the container to the docks. But the city is also very well connected via water with many port in the Adriatic Sea in Italy, Croatia, Greece and many others and lots of people every year are using Ferries to go to and from Trieste.

    • Go Around

Local public transport in Trieste is operated by Trieste Trasporti, which operates a network of around 60 bus routes and two boat services. They also operate the Opicina Tramway which is a hybrid between tramway and funicular railway providing a more direct link between the city center and Villa Opicina.

The city of Trieste has a large territory and a few beautiful parks. But also here you will not find such big parking for your car and it is recommended to leave your car in the surroundings, then go to the main center by public transport and make a beautiful walk there.

Castello di Miramare (Miramare Castle) is a small beautiful castle located just on the beach of Adriatic sea in the gulf of Trieste and very close to the city. It was built from 1856 to 1860 for Austrian Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian and his wife Charlotte of Belgium.

The castle's grounds include an extensive cliff and seashore park of 22 hectares (54 acres) designed by the Archduke. The grounds were completely re-landscaped to feature numerous tropical species of trees and plants.

Isolated between the sea and the green park the Miramare Castle looks like a haunted castle. And in some sense it is magic but the legend says that a tragic fate persecutes those who live there.

The castle was completed in 1860 by Archduke Maximilian of Habsburg for his young wife married three years earlier (1857).
