Isernia is a small city and the third one city in the region of Molise after Campobaso and Termoli.
First settlements of Isernia are dated back from Paleolithic, at least 700 000 years ago, they are first settlements found in Europe.
Isernia is a thriving Samnite city, the capital of the Italic League, Roman Municipium, tough opponent against Napoleon's troops and place of Bourbon reaction against unity of Italy in 1860. In 1960 the city of Isernia was awarded by the Gold Medal for Civil Valor during the Second World War. Finally it is the provincial capital, Isernia is a city referenced Alto Molise.

The Coins of Aesernia (after 263 B.C.), which were found only in copper, and have the legend "Aisernino", belong to the period of the first Roman colony, the style of their execution attests the influence of the neighboring Campania.

From the Highway A1, exit at San Vittore, follow the direction Venafro on SS6, continue on the SS85 in the direction to Isernia.
- From Naples
Take the Highway A1 Roma - Napoli, exit at Caianello, follow the signs to Isernia, take the SS85 in the direction to Isernia.
- From the North
Take the Adriatic Highway A14, exit at Montenero di Bisaccia / Vasto Sud / San Salvo, then take the SS650 (Fondo Valle Trigno) towards Isernia, continue on SS17, take the SS85 in the direction to Venafro and exit in the direction to Isernia.
- From the South
From the Adriatic Highway A14 follow the direction to Pescara, continue on the A16, follow signs to Benevento, continue on SS88, exit at Campobasso, take the SS87 (Bifernina road) in the direction to Campobasso / Isernia, continue on SS17, take the SS85 in the direction of Venafro and exit in the direction to Isernia.
- From Campobasso
Take the SS87 (Bifernina), near Vinchiaturo take the SS17, SS85, continue on in the direction to Venafro, and exit in the direction to Isernia.
- Go Around
