About Torre del Mangia

La Torre del Mangia in Siena is so called by the nickname of Giovanni Balducci (or "Duccio") - "Mangiaguadagni", who was the first keeper of the towel famous for his appreciation of food and pleasures of the table and squandering all his money by eating in the inns in Siena.

The towel is one of the most higher ancient towers in Italy (it is the second one after Torrazzo di Cremona) and reaching 102 meters, including a lightning conductor.

It was built between 1325 and 1348. According to the legends that are handed down in the city for centuries, stones at the 4 corners of the Torre del Mangia contain lucky coins engraved with Hebrew and Latin letters. This custom was very common in the Middle Ages and was used to protect the towers from thunder storms and other disasters. In addition, the four sides of the towel are perfectly oriented in pairs, according to the directions N-S and E-W. The construction of the tower is due to the brothers Francis and Muccio (or Minuccio) Rinaldo (1338-40), conducted by Maestro Agostino di Giovanni.
