The Teatro alla Scala (shortly La Scala) is one of the most famous theaters in the world for over two hundred years has hosted the best artists and was still commissioner of works presented in the opera seasons worldwide. It is located in the square Santa Margherita Scala, flanked by Casino Memories, now home to the Theater Museum at La Scala.

The theater takes its name from the Church of Santa Maria alla Scala, named in honor of the patron Regina della Scala, building demolished in the late eighteenth century to make way for the theater (New Reggio Ducal Teatro alla Scala), inaugurated on August 3, 1778 with the famous opera "Europa Riconosciuta" ("Recognized Europe"), composed for the occasion by Antonio Salieri.

The Museum of the Theater La Scala was officially opened on 8 March 1913 in the former Casino Memories attached to the Teatro alla Scala in a solemn ceremony.
