Every year is full with interesting moments and places where the Tour of Italy is passing through.

In 2013 Giro di Italia passed trough Lac du Mont Cenis and Col du Galibier in France to pays tribute in memory of romagnolo Marco Pantani, so called Pirata. On Col du Galibier you can find a Memorial in his memory.

Who was Marco Pantani?

marco-pantani-www.travelmapitaly.comWhat is famous with Marco Pantani and why the Tour of Italy passed through Lac du Mont Cenis and Col du Galibier in France?

In 1998 Marco Pantani partecipated the both, first Giro di Italia and then Tour de France. On Col du Galibier Pirata finally beat Jan Ullrich and became the first Italian to triumph in the Tour du France after Felice Gimondi, winner in 1965. After the first ten stages Pantani had nearly 5 minutes from recover to the German (he had lost 4'21 "in the time trial of Corrèze): he went therefore to the attack during the fifteenth district, on the Col du Galibier in nearly 50 kilometers from the finish, and came to Les Deux Alpes in solitary, with nearly nine minutes advantage over his rival. That day also took the yellow jersey, finally: the gap in general, after that historic feat, was never bridged, and Pantani went the edition number 85 of the Grande Boucle.

So in 1998 Marco Pantani won the both Giro di Italia and Tour de France.

Curiosity

Lac-du-Mont-Cenis-02-2013-www.travelmapitaly.comOn May 19, 2013 Giro di Italia started from Cesana Torinese, Piemonte, passed Susa and went up to the passage of Lac du Mont Cenis and because of a lot of snow it finished a little down from Col du Galibier in France.

If you pass these places before to enter in Italy stop for a while to enjoy the beautiful landscapes during all your travel to Italy.

Today in memory of Pirata, the young Italian Giovanni Visconti won the epic 15th stage.

How it was the weather on Lac du Mont Cenis?

On week before it was sunny but windy and a little cold, although without so many snow (see the first picture on the top). But then it was snowing a lot and everything become white, as you see on the picture here.
