About Roman Amphitheater
Basic Information:
The Roman Amphitheater in Cagliari, Sardegna has Roman origin. It is located on the north part of the city, close to the beautiful Botanic Garden of Scientific University in Cagliari.
The Amphitheater is half dug into the rock, while the remainder was white limestone, and the southern facade had to exceed 20 meters. The amphitheater hosted fights between animals, gladiators and specialized combatants who arrived outside of Sardinia from. Equally the death sentences were carried out in front of the cheering crowd. It could hold about 10,000 spectators, almost 1/3 of the inhabitants of the Roman Carales.
It was built between the first and second centuries AD, when Sardinia was under the Roman rules.
Following the spread of Christianity in the territories of the Roman Empire, gladiator fights became more and more unpopular, so much so that in 438 AD Emperor Valentiniano III forbade by law.
The amphitheater thus fell into disuse and from early medieval period to the Middle Ages it was used as a quarry by the various conquerors (Byzantines, Pisans, the Aragoneses) in need of cheap materials for the construction of new fortifications.
The area was acquired by Municipality of Cagliari in the nineteenth century that gave the archaeological excavations at Canon Giovanni Spano.
Today the amphitheater is covered by a wood and iron structure that can accommodate performances and concerts during the summer season.
