Stiffe Caves (Grotte di Stiffe)

Stiffe Caves in Abruzzo are caves with a rare beauty and still rather unknown place to visit and see. But for sure you will be satisfied and go and visit them.

About Stiffe Caves

Basic Information:

  • Village: San Demetrio ne' Vestini (Location: Stuffe)
  • Region: Abruzzo
  • Province: L'Aquila
  • Zona: Central Italy

The Caves of Stiffe are technically speaking a resurgence, the place where a river comes back to light after an underground stretch in the area of the small village Stiffe.

The presence of the watercourse which in some periods of the year brought considerable reach is surely the most important feature of the Caves, which are sometimes covered by a small stream whose waters murmur and whisper, and sometimes they are traversed by a river rushing along downstream rapids and falls with a deafening roar.

The resurgence of Stiffe has been known for many years by the locals since there are documents that speaks they have been in the old past times. The presence of a copious stream inside the cave has allowed in the early twentieth century to construct an hydroelectric power station - powered by water transported downstream by means of a pen-stock. In some places near the entrance it is still visible and it has been a source of energy until its destruction during world War II.

The project to develop tourism in the cave dates back over thirty years ago but only in the eighties it was provided for the implementation and in 1991 it was opened and inaugurated as a tourist complex Grotte di Stiffe (Stiffe Caves).
