About Basilica of Sant'Ambrogio
Basic Information:
Basilica di Sant'Ambrogio is one of the oldest churches in Milano. It is considered the second most important church of the city. It was built between 379 and 386 by the bishop of Milan, Ambrogio.
The church was built in an area where they had been buried the martyrs of the Roman persecutions. For this he was dedicated to the martyrs and was called Basilica Martyrum: also Ambrogio wanted storing all the relics of the holy martyrs Satiro, Vittore, Nabore, Vitale, Felice, Valeria, Gervasio e Protasio. Also Sant'Ambrogio was buried there and since then changed the name of Basilica assuming his name.
Basilica Sant'Ambrogio has a long story. The church was reconstructed many times but the it took the final appearance between 1088 and 1099, when the Bishop Anselm insisted radically to rebuilt it in the patterns of Romanesque architecture.
Similar to Santa Maria delle Grazie, during the Second World War, in 1943 it was bombarded and destroyed especially the outside of the porch, damaging the dome of the Basilica, the mosaic behind the altar and other external parts of the church.
