The Civic Museum and The Big Tower
About The Civic Museum
Palazzo Comunale known also as the People's Palace or Palazzo Nuovo del Podestà of San Gimignano is situated in Piazza del Duomo, the Big Tower (Torre Grossa) and the Loggia del Comune. It contains the Civic Museum with major works of the art schools of Florence and Siena from the thirteenth to the sixteenth century of the masters like Marcovaldo Coppo, Lippo Memmi, Benozzo Gozzoli, Filippino Lippi, Pinturicchio and Il Sodoma.
The Museo Civico di San Gimignano is located on the upper floors of the building. After the entrance you enter the courtyard built in 1323 and decorated with coats of arms, painted or carved in the center of a tank fitted in 1361. Among the paintings here is notable Sant'Ivo who give a justice of Sodom (1507), the Madonna with two Saints (XIV century) and a justice that tramples the lie monochrome by Vincent Tamagni. From here begin the stairs to the upper floors, covered by a roof supported by brick columns.
La Torre Grossa (The Big Tower)
La Torre Grossa (The Big Tower) is the tallest tower of San Gimignano (hence the name) and it is located in Piazza del Duomo next to the new palace of the Podestà.
It was started to build exactly 21 August 1300, four months after the city had hosted Dante Alighieri, and was finished in 1311. It is 54 meters high and the only one on which it is granted access to the public.
The tower rests on a passage turned and like all other towers of San Gimignano is build in square base. The stone floor was cut in regular drafts well.
On the summit you could enjoy magnificent views over the town and surrounding countryside. There is a belfry, surrounded by a walkway protected by small arches resting on the parapet. Coverage of the cell is pyramidal and it is reminiscent of the nearby tower Rognosa.
The tower is visited by the same ticket of the Museum.
