Curiosity

The Origin of the name Trento

According to the Latin tradition the name Trento comes from Tridentum (name given by the Romans) because of the three surrounding hills (Monte Verruca or Doss Trent, Dosso Sant'Agata and Dosso di San Rocco).

In fact the name is much more older and has an Rhaetian origin. Its name is taken from "trent" which means divide a river in three (due to the irregular bed of the river Adige).

Despite all the Latin tradition has prevailed, to the point that the old town hall is still read the inscription in Latin Montes argentum mihi dant nomenque Tridentum ("The mountains give me the silver and the name of Trent"), due to Fra Bartolomeo Trento († 1251).
