The Tophet of Nora was discovered in 1889 thanks to a storm, with the excavations carried out in the following year. Here were found many materials, especially some sandstone stones, often with symbolic representations, including in small niches, with hints of the buildings. The materials are dated between the late fifth and the end of the fourth century BC.

The stones of Nora have a preference for symbolic representations: the bethel stone sacred home of the gods, and the sign of Tanit, the Carthaginian goddess of the pantheon, depicted as a triangle surmounted by a circle, often enriched with astral symbols (sun disk and crescent moon). Less frequent depictions of human figures. The stones have different sizes, from small one to a real monuments.

The excavations have brought to light a series of four small and two larger statues, ceramics, turned out to be of considerable importance, especially chronological order.

Sant'Efisio Church in Nora

The church of Sant'Efesio of Nora is located on the beach of Mediterranean Sea near the ruins of Noranot so far from Pula. It is built in the Romanesque style and has three naves. Probably local people started to build it in 1089 and it was sacred in 1102.

In 1656 it was restored thanks to the donation by Alfonso Gualbès Marquis de Palmas, in gratitude for having escaped the plague after evoking the saint.

This church is the place where the procession has the culmination of the Festival of Sant'Efisio.

Tharros

About Tharros

Basic Information:

  • Archeological site: Tharros
  • Region: Sardegna
  • Province: Oristano
  • Municipality: Cabras
  • Zona: West Italy, In Mediterranean Sea

Tharros is an archaeological site in the province of Oristano, located in the municipality of Cabras, Sardinia. The city is located in the foothills south of the Sinis Peninsula, which ends with the promontory of Capo San Marco.

Some theories about the archaeological site of Tharros state that the city was founded by the Phoenicians in the eighth century BC Traditionally supported this thesis has recently been revised and subjected to more accurate considerations, especially after the discovery of some portions of the ancient settlement during excavation in the adjacent lagoon Mistras. A submerged wall along approximately 100 meters seems to be part of a port structure much older Phoenician era, in fact, only in 1200 BC the sea level rose, engulfing the existing buildings. So we assume the presence of a settlement proto-Sardinian present there in the Bronze Age

After the colonization of Carthage, the ruins of a previous nuragic village, on top of a hill called Su Murru Mannu (although in the literature is often labeled "muru", the result of a misunderstanding of Taramelli), the Carthaginians established a Tophet, a sacred pool of several typical Punic-Phoenician settlements in the western Mediterranean, the Tophet are considered an indicator of urbanization.

Despite the difficulties in dating precisely which dates back centuries the initial nucleus, from its construction until abandonment - (which took place in the tenth century AD) - the site was always inhabited: first by the Phoenicians and then the Romans.

The area is now an open air museum and the excavations going on uncovering know more about the past of this city. What you can see above dates to the Roman period or early Christianity. Among the most interesting are the Tophet, the spa, the foundation of the house and part of the area with houses and workshops.

Most of the artifacts found during the excavations can be seen at:

  • the National Archaeological Museum of Cagliari;
  • the Antiquarium Arborense in Oristano;
  • the Municipal Archaeological Museum Giovanni Marongiu Cabras;
  • the British Museum in London where, however, are not exposed.

Tharros was also the capital of the Judge of Arborea until 1070 (at least as reported by Fara and traditionally accepted), when the Judge Orzocco I de Lacon-Zori moved in Oristano its bishopric and the entire population of Tharros. Most famous is said (reported for the first time since Mattei) "Portant de Tharros sas pedras a carros", literally "lead from Tharros stones chariot", demonstrating that Oristano was founded with the material remains of the ancient Phoenician colony.
