History - Curiosity

The history of the born of Basilica Superga is very interesting.

In September 2, 1706 the Duke of Savoy, Vittorio Amedeo II and the Prince of Carignano Eugene of Savoy went up to the hill to observe Turin besieged by the French and Spanish. Vittorio Amedeo II, kneeling on an old pylon, exclaims that in case of victory, he would build a monument to the Virgin Mary.

And it was so, from the first hours of afternoon of September 7, clashed in the fields at Lucento and Madonna di Campagna, French and Piedmontese armies, and the victory went to the Piedmontese armies.

At the end of the battle, even before the end of the ongoing war against Louis XIV (Spanish Succession War), Victor Amadeus, later crowned King of Sicily, dismissed the vote and entrusted the design of the building to Filippo Juvarra (1711).

The temple was completed and opened to the public after of fourteen years works, on 1 November 1731.

The Royal Crypt

In Superga, by the will of Vittorio Amedeo III, in the Royal Crypt of Superga were buried some members of the House of Savoy. The remains are kept in an underground crypt richly decorated, can be visited also today.
