Bologna is a regional center of Emilia Romagna and it is in the hearth of 1 000 000 inhabitant Metropolitan.

Bologna is an antic University center and it has always been an important urban center, the first under the Etruscans (Velzna / Felsina) and the Celts (Bona), then under the Romans (Bononia), then again in the Middle Ages a free town (for a century was the fifth largest city in the European population).

Bologna is a home to prestigious cultural institutions and economic politic and one of the most advanced exhibition centers of Europe. In 2000 it was the "European Capital of Culture" and since 2006 "music city" UNESCO. The city of Bologna has been selected to participate in the Universal Exhibition in Shanghai 2010 along with 45 other cities around the world.

 

Curiosity

Repopulated in the tenth century Bologna began to nourish communal aspirations which came to an end to the death of Matilda of Canossa, in 1115 obtaining the following year a series of legal and economic concessions from the emperor Enrico V. The town took part in the fight against Barbarossa ended with the Peace of Constance in 1183, after which experienced a strong expansion, including construction (period of the Tower Houses) was a major center for trade through channels that allowed the transit of large quantities of goods. Just consider that at the end of the thirteenth century, with its 50,000, maybe 60,000 people was the fifth biggest city in Europe by population (after Cordoba, Paris, Venice and Florence) on a par with Milan and was the largest textile industrial center of Italy.

From the antic times Bologna has always been an important crossroad in Italy.

You can go to Bologna from North Europe and North Italy via Highway A13.

From West Europe, from Torino A4 and then from Milano you can go to Bologna via A1 and continue via A1 to Rome and Napoli.

If you wish to go to Ravenna and Napoli you should get A14 from Bologna.

 

    • Go Around

As almost all the cities in Italy the old historical centers don't give a big possibility to park your car. But Bologna has very well organized transport so it is recommended to leave your car outside the main city center and to use public transport to go to the main center. It is very easy to visit the city by walking and you will really enjoy it.

Parma is the second biggest city in the region of Emilia Romagna and one of the most important research centers in Italy. There 20 University Faculty in Parma: Agriculture, Architecture, Economics, Pharmacy, Law, Engineering, Humanities, Medicine and Surgery, Veterinary Medicine, Psychology, Physical and Natural Sciences, Political Science.

Parma has been an ancient capital of the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza (1545-1859). The city is a home of the University of Parma and since 2002 the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), form 1956 the Magistrate of the Po that now is an Interregional Agency for the River Po (AIPO), since 1990 the Po River basin Authority (AdbPo). Since 1994 there has also its place a detachment of the Department Scientific Investigations (RIS), which deals with scientific studies on Northern Italy. Also based in Parma major banking institutions such as the Savings Bank of Parma and Piacenza, better known as Cariparma and Banca Monte Parma.

 

Typical Food of Parma

Maybe you already know that Parma is world famous with its prosciutto, cheese, architecture and surrounding countryside. Its Prosciutto Crudo di Parma and Parmigiano Reggiano are so delicious that once you try them you will save these testes for ever look for them. The Secret of Prosciutto Crudo di Parma and Parmigiano Reggiano is in the lush meadows where cows produce milk but not only. Also the technology of producing Prosciutto Crudo di Parma and Parmigiano Reggiano is very important. These products should dry some months before to go to the market but they are not simply drying, they are drying in special conditions and it is very important the palaces they are drying in and its ventilation. At the end there are a couple of conditions that even the owners don't wish to share with nobody.

Everywhere you go in Italy you will feel good and well to try Italian Citchen that is usually light. But here in Parma you should not miss to try some typical food of Parma:

Did you know that?

The former Parma city tower, that you can see in a card from the '800 was 130 meter high tower and it was the highest building in Italy. It was the true symbol of Parma but unfortunately in 1606 it was collapsed.

Parma is very easy reachable by car and always the most preferred for visiting every one area in Italy.

The city is on the Highway A1 Milano - Bologna - Roma.

From the surroundings of Parma starts also Highway A15 Parma - La Spezia.

If you come from North Europe and Verona you can go down via Highway A22 from Verona to Modena and then to get A1 in the direction Parma e Milano or from Verona and then Mantova to get SS420 and SP343R via Colorno.

If you come from Brescia you can get A21 and E70 down to Fiorenzuola d'Arda and then via A1 in direction Bologna to Parma.

 

    • Go Around

You can easy visit all the historical parts of Parma by walking but to go and see some monuments nearby the river you need to walk a little more or to use a car or taxi. You should know that there are not such very big parking in the central part of the city although there are parking garages outside the city center, the biggest on is behind Teatro Due. Very used transport in Parma is also a biking.

Important: The city has an access control system which limits entrance to the city center to local tagged vehicles only. This system is generally switched off after midnight. There is an extensive local bus lines also.

Colorno is a small municipality in the Province of Parma in the Italian region Emilia Romagna. It is located at about 90 km northwest of Bologna and about 15 km north of Parma.

The most attraction of Colorno is its castle - Reggia di Colorno.

Reggia di Colorno

Reggia di Colorno is located in the north of the province of Parma, Emilia Romagna. The castle is well know also as Palazzo Ducale (The Ducal Palace) was built by Francesco Farnese - The Duke of Parma in the early 18th century on the remains of a former castle by Azzo da Correggio as a defense of the Po River. It belonged to the Correggio and Terzi families and in the 16th -17th centuries it was restored by countess Barbara Sanseverino who desired a true palace for her court and to house her prestigious collection of works by painters such as Raphael, Titian, Mantegna and Correggio.

Aranciaia di Colorno (The Orangerie)

Aranciaia di Colorno was built by the Duke of Colorno Francesco Farnese between 1710 and 1712. The Orangerie was the winter shelter of the trees of oranges and lemons in the summer decorating the beautiful garden of the Palace. The building, probably designed by the architect Ferdinando Bologna Bibiena (1657 - 1743), was to combine the features a particularly harmonious, it came to be in the vast area of the ducal garden.

In the second half of the eighteenth century Aranciaia lost its function to become a greenhouse for winter riding. It was used occasionally for exhibitions. With the unification of Italy the building, like many other state property was auctioned off and converted into storage.

Today Aranciai di Colorno houses the Museum of Rural Life and the pre-industrial technology.

The Early Christian Monuments of Ravenna contributed to enter the city in UNESCO World Heritage List.

Ravenna was an important center of the Roman Empire in the 5th century and then of Byzantine Italy until the 8th century. It has a unique collection of early Christian mosaics and monuments. All eight buildings – the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, the Neonian Baptistery, the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo, the Arian Baptistery, the Archiepiscopal Chapel, the Mausoleum of Theodoric, the Church of San Vitale and the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe show us the great artistic skill, including a wonderful blend of Graeco-Roman tradition, Christian iconography and oriental and Western styles. In you have already been in the orthodox churches of East Europe you will find much in common.

Ravenna is the largest and historically most important city of Emilia Romagna. The district of Ravenna is the second one in Italy and it is surpassed only by the one of Rome. It includes two large urban parks (Park on June 2 and the Park 1 of May), several villages in the hinterland, the proper city of WWF oasis of Punte Alberete.

The city of Ravenna is located only 8 km from the Adriatic Sea and with the Canale Candiano it is conntected also to the sea. The port of Ravenna is one of the most important in the Adriatic Sea.

About Reggia di Colorno

Basic Information:

 

Reggia di Colorno is located in the north of the province of Parma, Emilia Romagna. The castle is well know also as Palazzo Ducale (The Ducal Palace) was built by Francesco Farnese - The Duke of Parma in the early 18th century on the remains of a former castle by Azzo da Correggio as a defense of the Po River. It belonged to the Correggio and Terzi families and in the 16th -17th centuries it was restored by countess Barbara Sanseverino who desired a true palace for her court and to house her prestigious collection of works by painters such as Raphael, Titian, Mantegna and Correggio.

Later the castle was acquired by the Farnese of Parma. Ranuccio II and his wife Margherita Violante began a complete reconstruction that was completed under their son Francesco and the architect Ferdinando Bibbiena. Then the palace was the home of the defunct Enrichetta d'Este, a widow of Antonio Farnese - the Duke of Parma.

In the 18th century the Duke Filippo di Borbone commissioned the restructure of the castle by the French architect Ennemond Alexandre Petitot and tried to emulate in the interior the decor of the Palace of Versailles. Philip was married to Princess Louise Elisabeth of France, who was the eldest daughter of Louis XV of France.

On November 28, 1807 Napoleon declared the castle "Imperial Castle" and new restoration works were started. After the Congress of Vienna, the property went to wife of Napoleon Marie Louise of Austria who made the Reggia her favorite residence and created a wide English-style garden.

After the unification of Italy Reggia di Colorno became a state possession and in 1870 it was acquired by the province of Parma and now it is a home to ALMA - a word renowned International School of Italian Cuisine.
