Parco della Murgia Materana (Park of the Murgia Matera)

Parco della Murgia Materana established in 1990 and it includes the territory of Gravina of Matera, the rock churches scattered along the slopes of ravines and the plateau of the Murgia Matera. Important numerous farms, many of them fortified. Symbol of the park is the lesser kestrel, a small bird of prey in the area of Matera with numerous population.

 

Riserva regionale San Giuliano (Regional Reserve San Giuliano)

Riserva regionale San Giuliano is protected area established in 2000 and it includes the lake of San Giuliano, artificial reservoir created by the damming of the river Bradano, and the river stretches upstream and downstream of the river. Very important is the presence of birds here.

 

Colle di Timmari (Timmari Hill)

Colle di Timmari is a green lung situated about 15 km far from the city overlooking the valley of Bradano and Lake San Giuliano. It is a pleasant residential locality and on the top of the hill there is a small shrine of San Salvatore dating back to 1310. This is an important archaeological site where were found many relics Apulian type of prehistoric times both dated from the fourth century B.C. (including a tomb full of graveyards), many of which are preserved in the archaeological museum "Domenico Ridola".
