In the town can be seen at about 1500 trulli.

The history of these buildings is very special due to an edict of the Kingdom of Naples in the fifteenth century, underwent a tribute to every new urban settlement. The contes of Conversano owners of the land on which it stands today Alberobello imposed then sent to farmers in these dry lands to build without using mortar their homes, so that they could be seen as precarious buildings easy for demolition.

They therefore use only stones, the peasants were constructed in a round shape with a self-supporting domed roof made of stone circles overlap the simplest configuration and solid. The domed roofs of the trulli are embellished with decorative pinnacles whose shapes are inspired by the symbolic, mystical or religious elements.

They were made by skilled workers - artisans that were hired for the construction of the trullo. Depending on the quality of the pinnacle of the bill could therefore identify not only the skill of the craft manufacturer but also the value of the building. Increased spending in the construction of the trullo allowed to identify the more affluent families from less affluent.

Regarding the symbols painted on the roofs of the trulli often they are religious but sometimes it can present zodiac signs. Pinochle and the painted symbol together formed a kind of civic identity as long as Alberobello has denied official recognition by the contes of Conversano.
