Just down the small village of Capestrano startsTirino River that is fed by three sources: Capo d'Acqua Lake, Presciano and the Small Lake under Capestrano. The water comes mainly from Capo d'Acqua Lake while the other two are almost stopped.

The name of the river comes from the greek "tritano" and it means precisely threefold source. The Valle where the river flows is also called Tritana Valley or Trita Valley.

The river flows for 25 km in the fertile valley Tritana with a water flow of 6000 liters per second between the provinces of L'Aquila (Ofena, Capestrano) and Pescara (Bussi sul Tirino) before it joins to the Aterno-Pescara River. Its waters are crystal clear and clean, ideal for trout and other fish species. Close to the banks or swampy can be seen wading birds and waterfowl. Instead the nearest forests and the slopes of the mountains are rich of wildlife.

The Tirino River is a great place for canoeing, bird watching, walking or simply relax.

Capo D'Acqua Lake is a lake of private property within the National Park of Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga. It is a lake of spring water that was born in the '60 for irrigation of the surrounding fields. Thanks to the natural spring waters the lake offers excellent visibility and a unique lake flora.

The Caves of Stiffe are technically speaking a resurgence, the place where a river comes back to light after an underground stretch in the area of the small village Stiffe.

The presence of the watercourse which in some periods of the year brought considerable reach is surely the most important feature of the Caves, which are sometimes covered by a small stream whose waters murmur and whisper, and sometimes they are traversed by a river rushing along downstream rapids and falls with a deafening roar.

The resurgence of Stiffe has been known for many years by the locals since there are documents that speaks they have been in the old past times. The presence of a copious stream inside the cave has allowed in the early twentieth century to construct an hydroelectric power station - powered by water transported downstream by means of a pen-stock. In some places near the entrance it is still visible and it has been a source of energy until its destruction during world War II.

The project to develop tourism in the cave dates back over thirty years ago but only in the eighties it was provided for the implementation and in 1991 it was opened and inaugurated as a tourist complex Grotte di Stiffe (Stiffe Caves).

 

Opening Hours

The Caves of Stiffe are opened every day of the year at the following times:

In the Summer:

From 16 March to 14 October - from 10.00 to 13.00 and from 15.00 to 18.00. Last admission at 18.00.

In the Winter:

From 15 October to 15 March - from 10.00 to 13.00 and from 15.00 to 18.00. Last admission at 17.00.

Closed:

December 25 (morning) and January 1st (morning).

Note:

The distance for visits is at about 700 meters and has 30 m gradient with a constant temperature for all the year 10 degrees Celsius. Duration of the visit as approximately 1 hour and it is guided.

For groups more than 20 persons it is advised to book first before to go there.

It is adviced also to call and book your visit during the winter and spring, because in a few days of the year, due to flood or the weather conditions it is possible the cave to be closed for visits.

Campo Imperatore

Campo Imperatore with the National Park of Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga is the only one such enormous territory in Italy and even the Alps on the North could not offer you such vast wild areas with lack of human presence and settlements. Campo Imperatore is a vast high mountain field with glacial and alluvial-karst in origin, located at 1800 m altitude in the province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo in the municipalities of Barisciano, Calascio, Castel del Monte, L'Aquila and Santo Stefano di Sessanio, in the heart of the solid Gran Sasso Mountain in Italy and within the National Park of Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga.     • Observatory

Campo Imperatore is a destination for amateur astronomers and astronomy enthusiasts. It has an Observatory built between 1948 and 1955 equipped with a telescope of more than one meter in diameter and run by the Roman section of the National Institute of Astrophysics in collaboration with the Astronomical Observatory of Collurania and the University of L'Aquila. Since 2001 the Center is a home of the international program CINEOS that led to the discovery of asteroids 61000 and 1500 new items, including 6 near-Earth object and a planetoid. For over twenty years also Fonte Vetica is a home to several astronomical fields regularly organized by associations of amateur astronomers from all over Italy. Very famous is the Amateur Astronomers Group sponsored by the Astronomical Field Pescaresi "RA" (Gaspra) whose first edition was held in 1988.

 

    • Alpine Garden Vincent Rivera

Behind the Observatory is the Alpine Garden by Vincent Rivera realized ​​by the same founder and ex-rector of the University of L'Aquila in an area of ​​approximately 3500 square meters. The garden with annex museum is managed by the department of Environmental Sciences at the same university in collaboration with the Abruzzo National Park of Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga.

Prison of Mussolini

Campo Imperatore is famous for being the last prison of Benito Mussolini at the Hotel Campo Imperatore in 1943 that. The whole valley was often exceptional setting for films and commercials including Trinity Is Still My Name with Bud Spencer & Terence Hill (1971), The Desert of the Tartars with Vittorio Gassman and Philippe Noiret (1976), Such is the Life with the unique three and very good Italian comics Aldo, Giovanni and Giacomo (1998). Some singer also like this places and realized some of their songs here as Elisa (A sense of yourself) and Simona Molinari (In the air). If you like skying and you are looking for new fascinated places to ski this is the right place for you. If you are lucky you could go skying there till the end of April. But before to go there inform yourself if the Cableway and the Ski Slopes are open in their site.

Campo Imperatore is a home to a ski resort, the first born in the Apennines, and one of the highest in Italy. The plants, which grow at the western end of the plateau between the Valley of the Fontari and the Scindarella Mountain include 3 lifts and a total of 15 km of downhill skiing and 60 km for Nordic skiing. It also has a snow park for snowboarders with half pipe and boarder cross tracks and a ring for cross-country skiing. Broad is also the ability to ski mountaineering. In part there is a hostel and the aforementioned Hotel Campo Imperatore. The station is connected by Cableway to the Valley of the Gran Sasso and has parking facilities and additional accommodation in the locality of Fonte Cerreto.

The station is combined with the ski resorts in the area of Campo Felice and Ovindoli.

Rocca Calascio Fortress

Rocca Calascio Fortress in Abruzzo, Italy is an abandoned very old fortress that was used for cinema sets by Hollywood, Italian, French and German productions.

Rocca Calascio Fortress is situated nearby the village Calascio (AQ) in Abruzzo and it is in the National Park of Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga at 1520 meters. The castle is the highest on in Apennines in Italy. The place is a unique vantage point so that in ancient times was used to communicate with the castles of the Adriatic coast through a proven system of optical links scattered throughout the area (working at night with torches and mirrors during the day). In our days you can find only remains of Rocca Calascio there.

It is thought that the fortress was built at around 1000 A.C. although the first historical document attesting to their presence is dated 1380. The original structure consisted of a tower block in a quadrangular stones already squared and was used as a watchtower. The castle is in a very favorable position from the defensive point of view and it was used as a military observation point in communication with other neighboring towers and castles to the Adriatic.

rocca-calascio-02-travelmapitaly.comThe structure, made entirely of white stone blocks square, consists of a central male, possibly preexisting, crenelate walls of cobblestone and four corner towers with a circular base strongly slopes. Access is through an opening on the east side at about five feet off the ground which is accessed via a wooden ramp retractable originally bearing away stone shelves.

The castle was damaged by the earthquake of 1703 and has been subject to a number of conservative restorations between 1986 and 1989 aimed at restoring the structure and allow them to recover architectural and functional and it is now accessible to visitors free of charge.

Just close to Rocca Calascio Fortress you can find and see the Church Santa Maria della Pietà. The church dominates the southern side of Gran Sasso. It was built in gratitude by shepherds around 1400 A.C. after they defeated in a bloody battle a group of bandits from the neighboring state of the church.


Curiosity

 

The place of Rocca Calascio is fascinated many producers of cinema to use the fortress as a natural decor for many movies.

Since the eighties of the twentieth century, the area of L'Aquila and Gran Sasso in particular the fortress of Rocca Calascio were used for numerous movies. The first and main feature film is LadyHawke (USA, 1985) in which the fortress (still not restored) was a shelter of the hermit, played by Leo McKern. The next year Rocca Calascio was a set in The Name of the Rose (FRA-GER-ITA, 1986) with Sean Connery. Later were filmed The Journey of the Bride (ITA, 1997) and The Events Horizon (ITA, 2005) . More recently it has been set for the series of Padre Pio of RAI (ITA, 2006). The fortress is also visible in some scenes of the movie The American (USA, 2010) with George Clooney, shot entirely in the province of L'Aquila, in particular the film was made in the area of Castel del Monte, Calascio and Castelvecchio Calvisio.
