About Rock Churches of Matera

Basic Information:

 

Rock Churches of Matera and along the ravines of the Park of the Murgia Matera are at about 155 churches carved into the rock. Among the most important churches in the Sassi cave there are Santa Lucia alle Malve, complex rock that was once a monastic community, the Convicinio of S. Antonio that consists 4 crypts, Santa Maria Idris on top of the homonyms rock, the rich in frescoes Santa Barbara, Our Lady of Virtues that together with the above church of St. Nicholas of the Greeks now hosts major exhibitions of sculpture, and St. Peter's Barisano with brick facade and bell tower and interior almost completely excavated in the rock.

Outside the city limits there are among also others as the Crypt of the Original Sin recently restored example of Lombard painting with an extraordinary pictorial cycle of frescoes covering the walls of the left and bottom. Also the church of Santa Maria delle Valle, commonly known as La Vaglia that is the largest cave church of the city, with its facade and interior masonry tombs.
