Oratories of Urbino
Oratory San Giovanni Battista
The oratory San Giovanni Battista was erected in the first half of the fourteenth century. It was a scene of an ancient hospice but the facade was rebuilt in the early twentieth century. In 1416 the interior was frescoed by Lorenzo and Jacopo Salimbeni brothers from San Severino Marche. These frescoes and particularly the Crucifixion and Scenes from the Life of St. John represent an extraordinary example of the "International Gothic" (or "Gothic") which is considered the link between the medieval painting and the new Renaissance art. Two more beautiful frescoes due to the Salimbeni are the Madonna of Humility and the Madonna and Child.
Oratory San Giuseppe
The Oratory of St. Joseph was built in the sixteenth century at the initiative of the fraternity which has distinguished itself in assisting death row inmates and their families. The building has two chapels. The biggest - the Oratory itself - was rebuilt in the late seventeenth century and decorated by Charles Colburn from Roncalli. The lower chapel, however, remained intact. It houses a beautiful nativity scene with life-size statues, made of plaster in the middle of the sixteenth century Urbino Frederick Brandani.
