"Terzo di San Martino" in Siena and Piazza del Campo is the area expanded around the Francigena street - the pilgrim route heading to Rome. S.Martino was the name of the patron saint of pilgrims. In this area there is Piazza del Campo at the heart of the city. "Campo" means field and it is square as we know it today. This is where the Palio is held twice a year on the 2nd of July and 16th of August. In Piazza del Campo there are the Palazzo Pubblico (City Hall), the Torre del Mangia, with a magnificent view of the whole city from the top of the tower, and the famous fountain Fonte Gaia as well as many other churches and small medieval streets.
What to see in "Terzo di San Martino"?
La Torre del Mangia is so called by the nickname of Giovanni Balducci (or "Duccio") - "Mangiaguadagni", who was the first keeper of the towel famous for his appreciation of food and pleasures of the table and squandering all his money by eating in the inns in Siena.
The towel is one of the most higher ancient towers in Italy (it is the second one after Torrazzo di Cremona) and reaching 102 meters, including a lightning conductor.
The Civic Museum is located on the first floor of the Palazzo Pubblico, Piazza del Campo.
The museum has a historical and artistic heritage of outstanding value due to works such as Simone Martini's Majesty, the Good and Bad Government by Ambrogio Lorenzetti to the Italians and foreign paintings dating from the XVI and XI centuries, ceramic manufacturing of Siena XIV and XVIII, and other valuable collections.
The Art Museum for Children is part of the Museum Complex of Santa Maria della Scala (Piazza del Duomo, 2, Siena).
