marco-pantani-monument-www.travelmapitaly.com

Every year is full with interesting moments and places where the Tour of Italy is passing through.

In 2013 Giro di Italia passed trough Lac du Mont Cenis and Col du Galibier in France to pays tribute in memory of romagnolo Marco Pantani, so called Pirata. On Col du Galibier you can find a Memorial in his memory.

Who was Marco Pantani?

marco-pantani-www.travelmapitaly.comWhat is famous with Marco Pantani and why the Tour of Italy passed through Lac du Mont Cenis and Col du Galibier in France?

In 1998 Marco Pantani partecipated the both, first Giro di Italia and then Tour de France. On Col du Galibier Pirata finally beat Jan Ullrich and became the first Italian to triumph in the Tour du France after Felice Gimondi, winner in 1965. After the first ten stages Pantani had nearly 5 minutes from recover to the German (he had lost 4'21 "in the time trial of Corrèze): he went therefore to the attack during the fifteenth district, on the Col du Galibier in nearly 50 kilometers from the finish, and came to Les Deux Alpes in solitary, with nearly nine minutes advantage over his rival. That day also took the yellow jersey, finally: the gap in general, after that historic feat, was never bridged, and Pantani went the edition number 85 of the Grande Boucle.

So in 1998 Marco Pantani won the both Giro di Italia and Tour de France.

Curiosity

Lac-du-Mont-Cenis-02-2013-www.travelmapitaly.comOn May 19, 2013 Giro di Italia started from Cesana Torinese, Piemonte, passed Susa and went up to the passage of Lac du Mont Cenis and because of a lot of snow it finished a little down from Col du Galibier in France.

If you pass these places before to enter in Italy stop for a while to enjoy the beautiful landscapes during all your travel to Italy.

Today in memory of Pirata, the young Italian Giovanni Visconti won the epic 15th stage.

How it was the weather on Lac du Mont Cenis?

On week before it was sunny but windy and a little cold, although without so many snow (see the first picture on the top). But then it was snowing a lot and everything become white, as you see on the picture here.

There are lots of names that could be forgotten if we do not keep them in people's minds. One of those names is the name of Vittorio Puzzo.

Vittorio Puzzo was an young boy scout who probably never consider himself that he is doing something so much important that he will leave for the next generation and for the History of the region of Cavagrande del Cassibile, for Sicily, for Italy. The Story of Vittorio Puzzo

Since he was very young he showed that he likes nature, archaeological investigations and often went with friends in the mountains nearby Noto, Avola to look for trace of the past. Together with his friends Salvatore Cannarella, Paolo Florio, Franco Accolla, Armando Artale, Ventura, Ettore, ecc. he did lost of investigation and today we owe him a lot of the discoveries in the region of Cavagrande del Cassibile.

But the destiny was not so good to him. At the end of July 1959 he and his friends started for the last journey on his life but still nobody know that it will be the last one for him. Together with Salvatore Cannarella and Armando Artale they started for the new adventure. Seems everything was going well. They have passed difficult forest of ferns and brambles, Caciparis meanders river, Maruzza coast (the Caves of Deri). They were just thinking to have a dinner and then to go back home. Vittorio and Salvatore left Armando to prepare the dinner and they two went to discover the Caves of Deri.

On the way back a mass of brambles prevented them from the passage to reach their friend. And what to do? The best solution was to climb the rocks to avoid the brambles and then to jump down to the path and go to their friend. Salvatore did this first and he managed well. Vittorio did it for the second but slipping suddenly, fell down and pierced between the abdomen and groin with its own weight, the stick was gone deep.

Armando went immediately to look for help. The help came just on the next day. Then in the hospital he fighted for his life a few days but ...

Feast of Sant'Efisio in Sardegna

Where it is going to be celebrated?

Basic Information:

The Feast of Sant'Efisio in Sardegna

The Feast of Sant'Efisio is the most important religious procession of Cagliari and Sardinia, celebrating every year, starting from 1st of May. The Story of the Feast of Sant'Efisio

It is said that in 1656 the Sardinians prayed Sant'Efisio to defeating the terrible wave of plague, propagated on the island since 1652 due to some Catalan sailors affected by the disease and landed in Alghero on a merchant sailing ship. The epidemic infected the whole of Sardinia, Cagliari in particular, that killed at about ten thousand inhabitants, with almost half the city's population. The first victim was the Archbishop of Cagliari Don Bernardo De La Cabra. Meanwhile Cagliari was turning into a huge cemetery. Giovani Spano wants at this point Sant'Efisio appeared to the Vicerè Conte of Lemos to request, in order to liberate the city from the plague, the vote of the procession on 1 May. The Municipality of Cagliari in 1656 had promised to Sant'Efisio that if he could defeat the plague each year would be held a procession and festivities in his honor, starting from Stampace (quarter of Cagliari) to Nora, where the saint was martyred. In September with the heavy rains the plague disappeared and from the following year on 1 May started the First Feast of Sant'Efisio. It was chosen to make the Feast in May as a symbol of regeneration of nature.

How do they prepare for the Feast of Sant'Efisio?

The Procession starts on 1st of May. At about 40 festively decorated chariots drive off to Nora, drawn by oxen. Then come the dancers, at about 5500 people with the traditional Sardinian costumes, from all over the island that usually recite the rosary or sing goccius. After them arrives the members of Guardianìa and in the first line is the Third Guardian holding the Banner of the brotherhood. Then comes the Alter Nos, the representative of the Mayor. After the riders parade members of the Arch preceded by a brother holding a crucifix of 1700. The arrival of the chariot is preceded by the sound of launeddas. When the chariot comes in via Roma is greeted by the sirens of ships docked in the port of Cagliari, and it is walking on a carpet of rose petals.
