The church was built in an area where they had been buried the martyrs of the Roman persecutions. For this he was dedicated to the martyrs and was called Basilica Martyrum: also Ambrogio wanted storing all the relics of the holy martyrs Satiro, Vittore, Nabore, Vitale, Felice, Valeria, Gervasio e Protasio. Also Sant'Ambrogio was buried there and since then changed the name of Basilica assuming his name.

Basilica Sant'Ambrogio has a long story. The church was reconstructed many times but the it took the final appearance between 1088 and 1099, when the Bishop Anselm insisted radically to rebuilt it in the patterns of Romanesque architecture.

Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie (Milano)

"The Last Supper" by Leonardo da Vinci

About Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie (The famous church in Milan)

santa-maria-delle-grazie-milano-travelmapitaly.comBasic Information:

The Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie is a basilica and shrine in Milan, a member of the Dominican Order and headed to the parish of San Vittore al Corpo.

It is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the "Last Supper" by Leonardo da Vinci. It is in the refectory of the convent (owned by the City of Milan).

A short History of the Church Santa Maria delle Grazie

In 1463 the Duke of Milan Francesco I Sforza ordered to build a Dominican convent and a church in the place where there was situated a small chapel dedicated to Santa Maria delle Grazie.

The architect of the project was Guiniforte Solari. The convent was completed in 1469 while the church was not built until 1482. Other changes were made when the power was changed. Ludovico il Moro decided to change the cloister and the apse of the church. The building was completed around 1490. Il Moro had also decided to do the church a burial place of the Sforza and in 1497 and was buried there his wife Beatrice d'Este. According to an ancient tradition of Milan, Ludovico il Moro he also build a tunnel connecting the Castle Sforzesco with the church, then called "Sforzesco al Convento".

The lantern was at first attributed to Bramante, although it lacks any proof except that Bramante was in those years ducal engineer and was appointed once in the acts of the church (a marble delivery in 1494). But some recent studies are named also Amadeo, almost certainly the Bramante had still to be responsible for the initial design, but then he did not follow the actual works, which certainly were directed by Giovanni Antonio Amadeo. The basic size of 24 arms in Milan used for the sacristy was used by the same architect for the chapel in Santa Maria alla Fontana. In 1497 he bought 64 columns of light stone of Saltrio for the lantern and another 128 pieces of black and white stone to be delivered for transportation across Lake Lugano from Porto Ceresio or Riva San Vitale. In 1499 Milan was invaded by the French and then they stopped to build it. And even today the church is divided into two parts, one part is ancient and the front is more modern.

"The Last Supper" by Leonardo da Vinci

Santa Maria delle Grazie is a famous church in Milano because there, inside the church you can see the "Ultima Cena", called also "Cenacolò" or "The Last Supper" by Leonardo Da Vinci.
